Terry Reaney & The Bluebird Big Band

In the spring/summer of 2011 the Blackpool & Fylde College Big Band went into Chris Carter’s Bluebird Recording Studios to record their debut album. By autumn of that year, as the final notes died away, the band had been reborn as The Bluebird Big Band.

The BFCBB played its final gig in August 2011. But like a phoenix arising, this new band has lost none of the talent, energy and sheer dynamism of musicianship that marked it out as one of the leading training bands in the North West.

With a new home at the studios, a name change and additions to the line-up, the band has emerged as an exciting repository of traditional big band music, flavoured with modern arrangements and fresh pieces.

Created from the vanguard of a college course in big band musicianship this unusual vehicle is still led by Terry Reaney. But it must now stand alongside other professional outfits. Stepping away from the College, those Lionhearts of the old BFCBB realised that to survive the band must change its mindset.

It moves on to be tighter, slicker and more adventurous in its repertoire. Leading this band is not a role that Terry Reaney takes on lightly. In fact you might say he has been preparing for it all his life.

Inspired by his heroes Kenny Baker and Eddie Calvert, he joined the Bernard Taylor Band at only 16 where his ability was soon noticed and he moved on to work with the Ken Mackintosh Orchestra, Harry Roy in Edinburgh until he eventually started his own band, Terry Reaney’s Music Plus.

He joined one of the UK’s finest big bands, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra, where he was trumpet soloist for 15 years. With session work at the BBC and countless tours with top flight orchestras, he realised he had much to offer young up and coming musicians and the BFCBB began in 1993.
